Commitment to Public Education

The District of Columbia Education Compact is an independent non profit organization dedicated to ensuring the District’s public schools provide excellent education leading to success in post-secondary education, careers and life for all children. DCEC is helping to build a strong civic community of community stakeholders and public education agencies that work collaboratively around shared interests.

The foundation of this shared work is a set of four educational outcomes, covering the continuum of ages 0-24, developed jointly by key public and private stakeholders. These shared outcomes not only identify what all of the stakeholders hold in common, but also establish a framework for organizations and agencies to come together in their work.

DCEC has initiated a civic engagement strategy of Hubs – or networks of relevant stakeholders – including service providers, funders, public agencies, advocates, community members and others - around each of the outcomes. Each Hub has a community-based convener who works closely with DCEC to better coordinate and align the work of individual organizations in support of the shared outcomes and to measure progress on meeting the outcomes. Initially, each Hub develops a comprehensive, multi-year operational plan that connects and aligns the members’ work with the relevant shared outcome and establishes priorities and measures of success.

DCEC works with the Hub to collect and analyze data on the work, facilitate discussions on key issues and questions that arise as result of the data, and revise the plan as needed to meet the operational plan benchmarks and overarching outcome.

As the Hubs and the operational plans and are aligned with the work of the public education agencies, DCEC’s civic engagement strategy enables individual organizations to conduct their individual work in coordination with others – thereby both enhancing the individual effectiveness and creating more effective collective impact on important issues.
